What is Forestry Mulching?
Forestry mulching is a method of eco-friendly land clearing that uses a single machine to safely remove unwanted undergrowth and vegetation, without causing any damage to the existing topsoil or root structures of mature trees. Through this single process, land is cleared without the expensive steps of site preparation, tree felling, stump grinding, brush burning, waste hauling and site cleanup. One machine is used to grind under-story and mid-story growth into mulch that is spread evenly over the existing topsoil.
Why should I have my property mulched?
The entire process of Forestry Mulching occurs in a single step without disturbing the existing layer of topsoil. It reduces the stress on healthy trees caused by overcrowding while making them less vulnerable to attacks from invasive species. A layer of nutrient rich mulch is created from the existing biomass of undergrowth, fallen dead trees and saplings. This mulch layer helps to trap in moisture for mature trees, decrease weed growth, reduce invasive plant species like the Butterfly Bush and English Ivy and even help control unwanted insects like ticks.
Forestry mulching has been shown to greatly reduce forest fire "fuel load" through eliminating fuel sources such as fallen or rotten trees, dry bushes and small leafy plants. These under-story and mid-story fuel loads tend to catch fire quickly and burn with increased heat intensity. They also become a "ladder" of fuel that enables a fires elevation to reach the canopy of mature trees where it can spread rapidly. Should a fire have already taken place, forestry mulching is an efficient way to help preserve and repair the existing land through mulching fallen trees and laying down an insulating top layer of mulch that minimizes water pollution and prevents future soil erosion.
It also revitalizes important riparian resources like food, water and shelter for animals that are critical to your lands ecosystem. Turkeys, pheasants, deer, elk and various other animals can benefit from this form of under-story and mid-story conservational maintenance.Â
In our opinion, one of the most exciting benefits of forestry mulching is the ability to turn unusable land into property that is accessible and almost park-like in its appearance. What was once a forest of impenetrably dense vegetation can become a place for the dogs to exercise, the kids to play or the family to use in a number of different ways.
